American Idol- Georgia On My Mind
As soon as we were introduced to Skibo Ski I was saying to myself, “Please be a decent singer, please be a decent singer.” There is always room for a flashy, hilarious, crazy, nonsensical singer. He’s only had one appearance on the show, yet he already has a list of moments that made me laugh. I don’t know which one is my favorite. I’ll have to go with when he compares himself to a dollar store by saying, “Even with the dollar store, you can have everything you want in that one package, and it only costs you a dollar.”
The day after I make fun of Randy for his repetitive “I was not expecting that” comment, I have to admit I was not expecting Holly Harden to be as good as she was. Usually the Halloween outfits are a signal that I can just fast forward the performance. I think she has a great soulful voice.
Unlike Mr. Ski and Ms. Harden, Noel Reese relied on just her voice to give a great, memorable audition. It’s only been two episodes, but if there I going to be a great transformation success story this season, I’m hoping it’s Noel.
Some other thoughts:
- I like Mary J. Blige a little less after tonight. Does she smile? Did she want to be there? I was already distracted by her seemingly grouchy attitude when she rudely dismissed Holly Harden by snipping, “I don’t get it.” She finally came to life with the great General Larry Platt performing “Pants On The Ground”.
- Am I the only one who thought Vanessa Wolfe, the “authentic country” girl, was vastly overrated? I think the only reason they gave her the title “authentic” is because it looks like she stepped right from a trailer and into the audition room.
- There weren’t a lot of auditions that I thought were great tonight. One that I did love was Mallorie Haley singing what’s quickly becoming the most auditioned song, “Piece Of My Heart”.
- I also barely remember it since it was one of the early ones tonight, but Tisha Holland was also really good. She reminds me a little of Melinda Doolittle.
Do you think I left anyone out that deserves to be mentioned?

I'm going to have to read your entries immediately after the show, because I have already forgotten who 95% of the names are.
ReplyDeleteI think "authentic" is the new "consistent". That's great that you might be authentic or consistent, but are you GOOD?!
Skii Boski was classic and I still cannot understand how they allow a 60+ year old to audition. The rules state 28 is the max, so why the f*ck are you allowing Pants on the Ground guy to audition?
I don't know, but it was hilarious! And you're right about authentic being the new consistent. I'm ready for a good mix of "authentic", "total package", and "artistry".
ReplyDeleteEven though I watch AI, I still can't help but compare all these AI audition round blog entries to seeing Bill Simmons post more basketball articles.
ReplyDeleteOuch. What would you like to see? I don't get many emails from readers, so a reader's mailbag column would be tough to do.
