A continuous topic for debate about this show is what makes it worth watching: the contestants or the judges? The judges (and specifically Simon Cowell) would argue that it’s supposed to be all about the contestants, and while yes, they are why we are ultimately watching the show, the judges play a big part in whether the show is enjoyable or not. I think that was very clear tonight. The contestants, thankfully, were better tonight than last night, but what made the show for me was that I really enjoyed watching Neil Patrick Harris. He was entertaining, fun to watch arguing with Simon and had very constructive critical advice for the contestants. Joe Jonas, on the other hand, what a waste of space. And Kara—possibly becoming more annoying than Paula. Maybe the good judges are the ones who aren’t in the music business themselves.
So about the contestants:
Best of the Night
Lloyd Thomas – great audition, great voice, and an entertaining personality. Really looking forward to seeing him on the show.
Kimberly Carver – I think she’s one of the best girls so far. Simon had no clue what he was talking about.
Christian Spears—Another impressive sixteen year old.
As for the other ones who made it through: I’m glad I don’t remember her Erica Rhodes from Barney because I couldn’t stand her voice (Yes, I did watch that show in 2nd grade. I actually do remember a little girl named Kathy. I wonder what happened to her. Hopefully nothing as dramatic as the leather and whip get-up.) Dave Pittman was definitely a brave guy, but he didn’t make it through because of his voice. Toddrick Hall was fun to watch because of the song he made up, but I’m with Simon that his voice wasn’t amazing. And then what’s with Simon cutting people off so early? I might have liked Maegen Wright but I didn’t hear enough. Simon stopped her when she was just getting good.
One more week of Auditions then finally, onto Hollywood .
I actually agreed with Simon on Kimberly Carver. She seemed to have very little personality, but maybe that'll change. I thought Toddrick Hall's audition was one of the most enjoyable ever (for originality) but I don't think he'll make it far.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, my computer won't let me add my comments onto the original post, so I'll give my quick thoughts here:
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christina on Kimberly Carver. I didn't notice the lack of personality, but Simon had a problem because she was singing like a jazz singer. If he's not open to different types of genres then masybe it IS good that he's leaving (ok, I take that back. Please stay, Simon).
I thought Todrick Hall and Lloyd Thomas were pretty good. Erica Rhodes was very annoying and needs to get over the fact that the public doesn't care if she was a former Barney's girl. She doesn't have to prove that she's all grown up although I didn't really mind how she chose to show it :)
That Kimberly Carver reaction was ridiculous. She was one of the best singers of the season so far, in my opinion. Her personality couldn't possibly have been that lacking to offset her great voice.
ReplyDeleteThe Barney girl I thought sang the Barney song better than the En Vogue song! But she was cute, so glad she went through.
I was going to mention that oo about the Barney girl! I thought she was a lot better singing the theme song than singing the En Vogue song.
