Have you ever wondered what teachers discuss in the breakroom when they’re not reading through stacks of student essays and tests? Besides the usual topics of grades or lessons, Mitch and Christina often digress into conversations about movies, music and tv. We’re two English teachers who harbor secret hopes of one day becoming famous entertainment world critics. We know we’re a little obsessed, but we’ve accepted it, even embraced it. We’ve created this blog to invite you to join our conversation.

American Idol: An Episode That Doesn't Even Deserve A Photo

To commemorate the one week anniversary of perhaps the worst audition episode in American Idol history, Fox decided to air another candidate for that infamous title. I think I can say more about my ongoing dislike for Avril Lavigne and the obnoxious (but kind of funny) Katie Perry than I can about the quality of these performances. Of course Kara is a fan of the dramatic back stories that ruin our chance of seeing 75% of the people ho make it to Hollywood. So I’ll give a golden ticket to Katie for snapping at Kara by saying, “This is not a lifetime movie.” I was relieved to know I’m not the only one who thought Chris Golightly was overhyped. As Simon often says, Chris was very self-indulgent. Why can’t they just take a great song and sing it without ridiculous runs. Amazingly, 23 people made it to Hollywood despite the fact we saw around five of their performances. This criticism is nothing new, but it stands out even more after an episode that was mostly void of talent.

Good Performances:

Tasha Layton- My favorite of the night. I think Simon may have been just a bit understating it when he said, “I think people are going to like you.”

Jim Ranger- It sounds like he’d be able to sing country and rock very well. Avril said no, so what do I know? Maybe she would’ve had oogly eyes for him if he dressed like a punk rocker. What does she know about punk rock? This is the girl who mispronounced David Bowie’s name on stage. Ok, I’ll stop my Avril bashing now.

Andrew Garcia- Randy was this close to invoking the “You can sing the phonebook” line. I thought he was just a tad bit over-praised, but he has potential at least.

Mary Powers- I somehow get the feeling that she won’t sound as good on a bigger stage. It also seemed to me that she lacks stage presence which will cost her once she gets to Hollywood. The good news is that she dresses like a rocker chick. This is especially great news when auditioning for Avril Lavigne. Ok, I had to take one more shot at her.

What did you think? I know someone in our audience at least was an Avril fan. Were Guerin and Anson excited for the "Surrender" audition?

Christina's Comments

I'm with Mitch on this one.  This episode ranks in my top 10 of "I'm wasting my time watching this".  Although the one distraction I did enjoy was Katie Perry continually criticizing Kara.  I hope Ellen is kind of like that.

My favorite of the night was Andrew Garcia.  I would go as far to say that he has been one of my favorites of the whole audition series of episodes so far.  I also did enjoy listening to Tasha Leighton.  The rest of the ones who we saw make it to the next round were just okay.  I thought the judges were a little too hard on Jim Ranger; he had some potential even if he wasn't great.  I've always liked the female rockers, but I don't think Mary Powers was as good as others we've heard in the past.  We didn't see much range or power behind her voice.  Chris Golightly was definitely overrated. (And that's an actual last name? I thought the girl from Breakfast at Tiffany's just made it up.)

  1. I really enjoyed Katy Perry. Loved that she got under Kara's skin and really wish she was the 4th judge now. As for the "talent" I agree with both of you re: the Orphan (not impressed).... and based on a combo of back story and talent, I LOVED Andrew Garcia. P.S. - Guerin and Anson have not seen the episode. If/when they do, they will be happy to say Katy Perry (they are fans, even though they aren't allowed to hear her first hit) but I will not allow them to watch "Surrender" as I fear it will ruin it for them forever.

  2. Katy Perry was amazing! It's about time someone says how everyone at home feels about the show's continued harping on back story. Who the heck cares what these random people have gone through in life? Many people have troubles, this is a singing competition, not whose story is saddest. So big props to Katy for criticizing Kara throughout.

Since this is my first season with Kara (didn't watch last season), I have to say that man do I dislike her. She still manages to be less annoying than Paula and she's much better looking, but she is obnoxious and immature. Oh, and we got another "authentic" sighting from Simon! Woohoo.

This comment wouldn't be complete without me talking about my love in life, Avril Lavigne. She was a little obnoxious like Kara with her giggling and tone of her questions. But ehhh, I still love her.
