Have you ever wondered what teachers discuss in the breakroom when they’re not reading through stacks of student essays and tests? Besides the usual topics of grades or lessons, Mitch and Christina often digress into conversations about movies, music and tv. We’re two English teachers who harbor secret hopes of one day becoming famous entertainment world critics. We know we’re a little obsessed, but we’ve accepted it, even embraced it. We’ve created this blog to invite you to join our conversation.

Welcome to The Breakroom.

Lost Episode 3: What Kate Does

Not exactly the greatest episode of Lost. In fact, I was fairly disappointed that after the intense season premiere, this episode seemed to go nowhere. Also after watching all of season 1, and seeing how well the directors used to frame those flashback episodes, this one just didn’t seem to work well at all. Hopefully it's just setting up better episodes to come.

I thought the best scene was where we see Sawyer with the wedding ring he intended for Juliet. It was just a reminder of how amazing an actor Josh Holloway is. I also liked that we were reminded that Kate came back for Claire—that at least gave some connection to everything happening off the island.

Even though I wasn’t a fan of this episode’s sideways story, I still am very interested in where the writers are going with this timeline. It seems like certain events are destined to carry themselves out even if we are in a completely different timeline: Ethan remarking about sticking needles into Claire, examining her baby as he did in Season 1 of Lost when he stole her (although we didn’t see that until Season 3), Kate taking care of Claire and her baby. It also seems like these alternate timeline characters might have slight unconscious memories about the old timeline like Claire naming the baby Aaron. This is still setting up the question: Why is Aaron so important? I also wonder if the psychic from Season 1 will ever come back.

The temple scenes were starting to annoy me because of the cryptic nature of everything that’s going on, but I do like Dogen’s character. Here’s my new speculations based on what we’ve heard: Being infected/being claimed as they have said Sayid is—we assume this means by something connected to the smoke monster. But how bad is this? I’m having a hard time believing that MIB/smoke monster is completely evil. What if, as Jack presumes, we can’t really trust these temple people either? This brings me back to Christian Shephard’s role in all of this. Christian Shepherd for a while was resurrected as the MIB, just like John Locke now is. But was he ever really bad? And if Dogen said that Claire was now claimed, she did help Jin with those two temple people who were going to kill him (I told my sister as we were watching the episode that I hope they die. I was actually thinking, if they don’t die, these writers are in trouble. Thank goodness they did.) Doesn’t that mean that she’s not completely bad? Claire certainly looks like she’s turned into a Rousseau type character which might be fun.

Also I’m a little confused about timelines. Right now on the island it is 2004, just like it is off the island, right? The timelines are only a few months apart. Kate said in episode 1 that it looked like it was right after Desmond blew up the hatch which was about 2-3 months after the plane crashed (I think). This makes it likely that somehow these two timelines are going to intersect, but I wonder how that will work? When Jacob said, “They’re coming,” at the end of last season, I’m pretty sure he was referring to the characters off the island. But how can two of the same person exist at the same time? Does that mean that each character has to have one of their selves die? I have been speculating along with other Lost fans, that maybe the characters on the Island will die and then their only true self will be the alternate timeline self. But, as my sister pointed out, then what would be the point of everything that’s happened on the island?

Lots of questions to still be answered. The next episode looks much better than this one from what the previews showed—a lot of Locke (actually MIB Locke) and Sawyer, two of the best actors on the show.

  1. This show makes my head hurt sometimes. The primary reason why this episode was disappointing was because it was a Kate episode. I know that might be oversimplifying things, but it's similar to how my least favorite Simpsons episodes are usually the ones that focus on Lisa, or my least favorite Beatle songs were the ones that Ringo sings. I just don't think her character is that interesting. On the plus side, I AM liking Jack a lot more now.I'm happy to hear next episode features some of our favorites.
