Quick Thoughts on Tonight’s Top 11:
Lee Dewyze-“The Letter”: What a coincidecen that someone performs “The Letter” the same week Alex Chilton died. I don’t think it was done as a tribute since sadly, noone mentioned his passing on the show. I’m usually not a Lee Dewyze fan, but I thought he was very good this week. It was nice to see him tackle something different. Grade: B+
Paige Miles-“Against All Odds”: Have you ever heard Randy Jackson give such negative feedback? This was as awful as it can get at this stage in the season. I don’t know what Simon is remembering when he recalls a good Paige performance. Please let this be her last week. Grade: F
Tim Urban- “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”: Tim’s advantage is he knows he’s not a great singer, so he doesn’t choose songs that will embarrass him from a vocal standpoint. The result is a performance like tonight where he may have been in pitch, but brought nothing to the table. Very bland. Grade: C
Aaron Kelly- “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”- He doesn’t have the voice of David Archuletta, but I think he’s 100 times more personable. His laryngitis definitely affected his singing tonight. The great news is he got to perform after Paige and Tim. Grade: B-
Crystal Bowersox- “Me And Bobby Mcgee”- When I predicted she would finish second this season, it was more of a statement about the people who vote than about Crystal. She might be the best singer ever on American Idol. I agree with Simon that she shouldn’t change too much. My biggest fear for her is that she will give an awkward performance when trying to appease Ellen and Kara. Grade: A
Michael Lynche- “When A Man Loves A Woman”- Michael has the advantage of being the sole soul singer this year. Although I think he sounded good, I don’t think he stands above any of the show’s previous soul voices like Ruben Studdard. Grade: B
Andrew Garcia- “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”- It was painful to see Andrew move around the stage without his guitar. He didn’t feel any connection to the lyrics; there was absolutely no soul. Since the theme tonight was #1 songs, here’s a little trivia question: What was Paula Abdul’s first number one song? If you don’t know the answer, you clearly have not been watching the judges critique Andrew this season.
Grade: D
Katie Stevens: “Big Girls Don’t Cry”- Is it me or does Katie seem a little stuck up? Ok, it’s probably just me. I think she sounds great when she goes into a lower register. The first part of tonight sounded wonderful. The rest, not as much. Grade: C+
Casey James- “The Power Of Love”- Once again, I just don’t get it. I don’t see how Casey is any different than any regular bar singer. He’s just not that strong of a singer. I was very bored by his performance. Grade: C
Didi Benami- “You’re No Good”- I agree with the judges when they said she didn’t seem natural tonight. She showed a more fiery side to her personality last week, but I like her best when she shows a softer side. Grade: B-
Siobhan Magnus- “Superstition”- Siobhan did not do anything tonight to capitalize on last week’s buzz worthy performance. She still sounded good, but is still clearly behind Crystal as the one to beat. Grade: B
Who Will Get Voted Off:
I really hope it’s Paige. If she received the lowest amount of votes last week, I wonder if Simon would have used the judges’ save on her. It’s clear that she was the singer he had in mind when Ryan asked if anyone in the bottom three was worthy of the save. However, if she gets voted off tomorrow, I can’t envision them using it on her. Joining her in the bottom three should be Andrew and Tim. If Paige doesn’t go home, then I think Andrew is the next in line.

I'm glad that I chose Crystal to win because she is clearly in a different league. I want to hear her perform without a guitar. Paige definitely deserved to get voted off the show. I think that Tim should be voted off next week and Andrew the week after that.
